OO. Post by: Comib #mission #imposible #iv Loading... Especially when they're such big inspirations in our lives. When somebody says, "She's like the Greg Grunberg to the JJ Abrams" or even when she says, "You're the Tina to my Amy," or, "The Alex to my Roberto." It's kind of surreal. It's like a kick in the ass. We're doing this. This is happening. They are our writing and creative inspirations. Not the only ones, but the most important. Consistently, these six people have continued to create, write, direct, produce, and star in some of our favorites. Baby Mama, Mean Girls, SNL, Star Trek, Transformers, FRINGE, LOST, Alias, Armageddon, HEROES, etc. There's nothing we really want more than to properly earn the comparisons between ourselves and these lovely people. With my birthday coming up in two weeks it's really motivating me to strive harder to achieve this kind of excellence. Not just for myself, but for Caroline, and even Alexa. One day I want teenage best friends to look at each other and say, "You're the Caroline to my October," and goddamn, that's gonna be a good day. -Bones PS: I have to go two weeks without my glasses because I got a new prescription so I had my frames sent away for new lenses. It was thrown together somewhat hastily and was started as I was bored during a viewing of Nine. There's a good chance that I will disagree with some element of it later. There are also plenty of movies from the decade that I have not seen that could reasonably have ended up on this list, so take it for what you will. If you look the list over, please feel free to tell me how wrong I am. They are listed below with comments. Maybe. But first... Infernal Affairs (2004) directed by Andrew Lau & Alan Mak It's amazing how much The Departed owes to this film. Scorsese's remake follows this original closer than most people realize. I've never been able to enjoy The Departed quite as much as this. [IMG] 9. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000) directed by Ang Lee I think most people forget this movie came out in 2000. [IMG] 8. Sunshine (2007) directed by Danny Boyle Beautiful. Unsettling. Majestic. [IMG] 7. Children of Men (2006) directed by Alfonso Cuaron From a purely technical standpoint, this film is a marvel. Add a great story and dystopian atmosphere and you get this. [IMG] 6. The Dark Knight (2008) directed by Christopher Nolan Take everything said about Children of Men and add The Joker. Truly one of the best performances of the decade. [IMG] 5. Sideways (2004) directed by Alexander Payne Easy to be taken as breezy but great comedy/drama, but there's so much more going on. [IMG] 4. Superbad (2007) directed by Greg Mottola My favorite comedy of the decade. Probably my favorite, period. [IMG] 3. Casino Royale (2006) directed by Martin Campbell Director Martin Campbell revived the Bond franchise with Goldeneye and did it a second time with this. He was helped by the awesomeness of Daniel Craig and the story groundwork laid by Ian Fleming's first Bond book, nevermind the fact that it was over 50 years old. Even I can admit that Die Another Day was terrible. This was the opposite of that. [IMG] 2. There Will Be Blood (2007) directed by Paul Thomas Anderson Daniel Day-Lewis gives the single best performance of the past 10 years, a performance aided by an epic story dealing with capitalism, greed and religion. [IMG] 1. Y Tu Mama Tambien (2002) directed by Alfonso Cuaron Uplifting and tragic all at once. Excels at using Mexico as another character. As close to perfect as a movie can get. [IMG] Loading... When did star trek lose its balls? For those who don't watch, Star Trek started from the vision of Gene Roddenberry. He wanted to make a show, in space, showing a utopian future; one where people of Earth had learned to live together despite race, religion, nationality, or creed. while he couldn't show everything he wanted due to network censors, gene roddenberry pushed the limits whenever he could. He showed men and women as scantily clad as possible for daytime tv. When the networks finally allowed him to show an uncovered belly button on screen, he created a race that had two. Speaking of races, gene gave two of his characters the first interracial onscreen kiss ever seen. He put a Russian, at the time America's hated enemy, at the weapons and navigation. He put a Japanese-american, also a race held with mixed feelings due to grudges from WWII at the helm. He put an african-american *woman* on the bridge, albeit at communications, but still a hugely controversial move for the time. Martin Luther King Jr. actually came to see Nichelle Nochols when she was thinking of leaving the show, and asked her to stay, stating all the advances she was making, as both an African American and a woman. She still likes to tell a story of a young woman coming to her and telling how she saw Uhura (Nichols's character) onscreen and said "look mama! There's a black lady on TV and she's not a maid!". This woman told Nichols that seeing her on television meant she could do anything. That woman was Whoopi Goldberg. These progressions were thanks to Gene Roddenberry. Then the network cancelled his show. In the first few seasons of ST: The Next Generation, there was again more opportunities. GR put a woman as head or security. He put a blind black man at the helm. While in many instances the viewer caught but brief glimpses in the background, every now and then one could catch a male crewmember wearing what is traditionally thought of as a female's uniform. Indeed, even the "dress" uniforms consisted of just that: a dress and leotards. When Gene Roddenberry died, it seemed, so did the trend of showing unconventional things as normal. When shows such as "Will & Grace", a show about a gay man and a straight woman, were gaining speed, where was Star Trek to lead the charge? With its long-held tradition of "acceptance to everyone", where were the gays? The lesbians? The transvestites, transexuals? Why did Babylon 5 have to hint at a bisexual character first, when Star Trek was known for such things? While in Voyager there was a woman captain, and in Deep Space 9, the captain was african american, both of these came well after such things were commonplace on television. In the long history of Star Trek, these things should have been shown while they were still highly controversial, not after they were commonplace. With the reboot of Star Trek by J.J. Abrams, it seems the modern Trek is continued. While still full of semi-nudity and shirtless captains that Trek is known for, gone is the sense of something larger, of the truly bright future that Gene Roddenberry envisioned. Star Trek used to stand for something. It stood for hope, for acceptance, and most imprtantly equality. Now it seems to stand for nothing but dollar signs. Loading...
