As he explains: "I've always loved the Lyric and I love it even more since becoming Artistic Director. The commitment of the staff, the groundbreaking work with young people, the scruffy beauty of the auditorium, the blossoming of our new garden all provoke real excitement in me on our collective journey over the next few years. "The journey for audiences begins with this new season of plays which embrace and celebrate our proscenium. There's work to provoke, to chill, to surprise and to amuse. New writing, classics with a twist, ghost stories and the rebirth of Panto at the Lyric." The season kicks off with the world premiere of Punk Rock, which runs from September 3 to September 26, 2009. Punk Rock, a powerful new play by Lyric Artistic Associate Simon Stephens, is directed by Sarah Frankcom, whose previous work includes Stephens' Olivier Award-winning On the Shore of the Wide World (Royal Exchange and National Theatre). Drawing on his past experience as a teacher, Stephens' presents a group of educated, articulate, aspirational young people and reveals step-by-step the dislocation, disjunction and latent violence simmering under the surface of success. A young ensemble cast includes 18 year old Harry McEntire, who was recently seen in Spring Awakening. Stephens' other works include Harper Regan, Pornography and Motortown. Punk Rock is followed - from October 7 to November 14, 2009 - by Trevor Griffiths' Comedians. Sean Holmes directs this 1970s classic, in which six budding comics embark on the most important evening of their lives. Failure or success? What will be the price of each? The cast includes Matthew Kelly (as Eddie Waters), whose previous credits include Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? Victory and Of Mice and Men, for which he received an Olivier Award for Best Actor; Olivier Award-nominated David Dawson (as the intense and unsettling upstart, Gethin Price), whose credits include Romeo for the RSC, Smike in the West End transfer of Nicholas Nickleby, and Frank in Sean Holmes' acclaimed production of The Entertainer (Old Vic); and Mark Benton, TV's Northern Lights and The Street (as Ged Murray). Griffiths' other work include the film Reds, written with Warren Beatty, for which he received the WGA Best Screenplay Award and an Oscar nomination; and A New World which premieres at Shakespeare's Globe this summer. For the Christmas season - from November 21, 2009 to January 3, 2010 - there's a traditional pantomime, Jack and the Beanstalk. Co-written by four of the UK's most diverse and innovative writers - Richard Bean, Jocelyn Jee Esien, Joel Horwood and Morgan Lloyd Malcolm - `to ensure the quality of production that pantomime deserves, and plot twists to surprise and delight', Jack and the Beanstalk is directed by Steve Marmion, who recently directed the acclaimed Edward Gant's Amazing Feats of Loneliness for Headlong. The New Year begins with Anton Chekhov's Three Sisters which runs from January 15 to February 20, 2010. Theatre company Filter, together with Artistic Director Sean Holmes, take on Chekhov's classic and strip it bare. The youth, exuberance and creativity of Filter, combined with Holmes' attention to detail, will cherish the heart of the play whilst shedding new light on this classic. Holmes and Filter's past collaborations include their irreverent and fast-paced version of Shakespeare's classic tale of mistaken identities, Twelfth Night (RSC and tour), and their ground-breaking version of Brecht's Caucasian Chalk Circle (National Theatre and tour). Three men gather, each with an uncanny tale to tell: their chilling stories will `bleed off the stage and into your dreams'. Starting a little later than traditional evening theatre (8.30pm), the shades of past, present and future worlds are conjured under the Lyric's historic proscenium arch as the dead of night approaches. Ghost Stories is directed by Nyman, Dyson and Holmes. Dyson has won numerous awards as the co-writer of the hilariously bleak The League of Gentlemen, including a Perrier Award, Bafta Award for Best Comedy and the Golden Rose of Montreux. While the stage show he co-penned, A Local Show for Local People, was nominated for an Olivier Award in 2002. Nyman, who won the Best Entertainment Olivier Award in 2005 for Something Wicked This Way Comes, is also the award-winning co-writer and co-creator of the acclaimed TV productions Derren Brown - Mind Control and Trick of the Mind. And he co-wrote and co-directed Derren Brown Live, An Evening of Wonders and Brown's most recent live show - Enigma, which opens at the Adelphi Theatre on June 15. The next generation of theatre makers will now have a new home in the Lyric's fully equipped 112-seat studio theatre. Feeding into artistic programming, they will work under the direction of the Lyric Artistic Associates, making the studio London's only dedicated theatre space programmed and run by teenagers and emerging artists. * Delicious * Digg * Reddit * Facebook * Stumbleupon Right Content Related Links * Theatre Home * Theatre Archives * Theatre Listings * Theatre Gallery * Lyric Hammersmith Website Footer (c) 2001 - 2010 IndieLondon.co.uk | Terms and Conditions | Privacy | RSS Feed | What is RSS? web counter
