Flatley [IMG] posted Jan 7th 2010 11:14AM As expected, CES '10 is all aflutter over 3D -- and as expected, it's the glasses that are the sticking point for most people. What if we told you that you could get really "cool," "stylish" glasses -- ones that look so good that you'd want to wear them all the time? An outfit called Gunnar Optiks is pleased to announce its new i-AMP specs "for the most widely used 3D platforms in gaming and video." Apparently, this guy will become available in Q2 of 2010 (for iZ3D gaming systems and RealD video), at prices starting at $90 -- with prescription eyewear to become available in Q3. But why wait? We took a look, so you can decide for yourself if these are worthy of a repeat viewing of U23D. The Fly is unavailable for comment. That stuff limits the abilities to make them stylish. They can never be as slim as polarized, we can only hope they will focus on developing curved LCD glass just for shutter glasses. Using polarized stereoscopic strains your eyes, causes asthenopia, always have been always will. It did in the 1950s and 1980s 3d movies too, which were also stereoscopic, contrary to the incorrect assumption that anaglyph, the red and blue, which was rarely used. It works for movies in short doses, yes, but to actually sit down and constantly watch Television in this way will just cause more and more strain. Stereoscopic was a parlor trick when it was invented, and still is now, there is nothing high-tech about it, and very few things to expand on with the technology, it is a passing gimmick, one in which I can't wait to go away. Now, I don't know how the glassesless 3d stuff works, maybe that will stick around, but all this investment into Stereoscopics is such a waste. Your eyes had to strain to maintain a coherent view of what was happening. The sync problem no longer exists with digital projectors. Do yourself a favor and go see Avatar at a decent theater. Report Name _____________________ Email _____________________ Reason _________________________________________ _________________________________________ _________________________________________ _________________________________________ _________________________________________ _________________________________________ _________________________________________ SUBMIT Cancel - Reply %ChildReplyHTML% RandomGuy RandomGuy Posted Jan 7th 2010 11:46AM Highest Ranked @SirNoDroin Yes and reading books causes athenopia, but not quite as bad as looking at a computer monitor all day. In other words, no big deal, just take a few moments to rest your eyes by focusing on something in the distance every once in a while. I do agree that stereoscopic is a gimmick, just like HD was, just like surround sound was, just like color was. Ultimately a story can be told and be engaging without all of that. Remember the first color movies? (Wizard of Oz, etc) they were over-saturated nightmares. It was like a rainbow threw up on the set. Movie makers followed that model for years trying to put as much vivid color on the screen as possible. It took decades before films started using understated and muted colors to tell a story. In the early days of color you would have never seen something like Shawshank Redemption. 3D has had a very similar introduction. There have been stereoscopic slides since before motion pictures, and viewmasters have continued that tradition, but stereoscopic 3D is just now starting to hit the mainstream. It is no longer the occasional gimmicky movie coming out in 3D, but literally all animated films, and some of the higher budget blockbusters. This is of course possible due to technical advances in digital projection in the cinemas making it more affordable and pleasant than previous iterations. However we still haven't quite gotten past the "throw it in your face" use of 3D, but we are getting closer. Avatar was a very subtle use of 3D and added to the dimension of the movie without being garish or distracting. I saw it and followed it up the next day with an Imax 3D nature movie and was surprised that Avatar caused me no eyestrain at nearly 3 hours, while the 45 minute Imax movie (originally praised for their 3D prowess) gave me a headache and made me want to hurl. 3D will improve, once it becomes commonplace. Movies have toned down the color, and there are much fewer distracting, over the top, surround sound moments anymore. Hollywood just needs a little time to learn to use the tool. It's just a few years behind all this tech, so no need for all the whining. Personally, I don't care about the 3D. It's not the tech that gets me to buy or see a movie, it's the quality of the story and how well it's told. 3D or any other experience enhancing tech will help the overall experience, but only the first few times. Then it gets old. A good story takes a long time to get old. It's the good story that gets me to open my wallet.
