Go Bears Go by Rocksanddirt on Nov 24, 2009 11:47 AM PST up reply actions [IMG] Every couple of years, someone calls the Cal Band and asks for a straw hat band performance at a funeral. They usually politely decline as they feel it would not be appropriate. If the person is very insistent they might send a single trumpet player for a more somber performance of All Hail. I'm not playing with you, T-bred! by AndBears on Nov 24, 2009 12:09 PM PST up reply actions I hope they call on behalf of someone they know. In other words, Go Bears! by royrules22 on Nov 24, 2009 12:19 AM PST reply actions My Frat Brother... Ahmad Anderson actually came up with the Bear Territory chant. He played on the team in the early 80s and was a D-back during The Play in '82. by BlackandOldGold on Nov 24, 2009 4:09 AM PST reply actions 1 recs [IMG] Nostalgia I remember the first time we, as students, were introduced to the cheer. At first it seemed a bit cheesy (to the cynical and academically oriented Cal undergrads), but it caught on very fast and quickly became a favorite. I'm really glad it survives, along with the Roll On chant. Yet another reason Cal fans and traditions are better than others: our cheers are melodic. Whose Axe? OUR AXE! by SoCal Oski on Nov 24, 2009 7:53 AM PST up reply actions [IMG] our cheers are melodic and organic. I'm not saying Cal fans are unique in making up their own cheers, because we're not. And we've certainly borrowed our fair share from elsewhere, such as the band's debt to tOSU. But in my experience, we've got more home-grown traditions than average, and we tend to shy away from the generic staples you hear at most stadiums and arenas and gyms across the country-stuff like, "DE-fense, clap-clap", or "Let's Go (Hoy-as/Oi-lers/Bad-gers/Bru-ins/etc.)". I went to grad school in Madison, and they've got a very good band and spirited student section as well. But it always bugged me that one of their trademark bits consists of singing, "When you say WIS-con-sin, you've said it all", to the tune of an old Budweiser commercial. I am, of course, fine with the whole beer thing, but Budweiser? Shit beer that's not even brewed in your state? Isn't there an old Schlitz, Pabst, Old Style, or Leinenkugel tune you could have borrowed? Beyond that, you're getting all riled up to a corporate jingle?! Create your own authentic culture; don't borrow crap fed to you by Madison Avenue. The sad thing is, it's been so long since Anheuser-Busch ran that ad campaign that most of today's students probably don't even know the tune's origins. Go Bears! by California Pete on Nov 24, 2009 8:25 AM PST up reply actions 2 recs [IMG] Sterile cheers I agree 100% about the whole cookie-cutter cheer thing. Which is why the Bear Territory and Roll On cheers are so great. A cousin of mine (a UC Irvine student at the time), came up one year on a roadie to visit me and another cousin who happened to be a Furd. During his trip he also caught football games at each place. His response was that he liked the Cal crowd and experience better, partly because the student section was more lively even though our teams were pretty bad, but also because of the cheer. He particularly liked the Roll On cheer as it reminded him of the sort of sing-songy cheers heard at soccer matches in Europe. Whose Axe? OUR AXE! by SoCal Oski on Nov 24, 2009 8:55 AM PST up reply actions [IMG] You know Many of the songs in European football are melodies taken from church hymns or popular songs. There video a plenty of fans in England chanting how team X is gay while melody is a church song like "Simple Gifts" that Shaker tune.
