You have fought bravely in the past years ! We have the utmost respect for your courage. You remind us of us *the French Republic- when we were attacked by the allies Austria, Prussia, Spain and Britain only 20 years ago ! However, it is now time to throw down your weapons as we, the French, have no quarrel with you. We are here not to wage war against the Spanish population, but against the British that fill you with false promises and bribe your local governments to take arms against us* Yes, your traitorous governments are being bribed by the British to wage war against us and YOU and your families bleed. Have the Spanish people not been our loyal southern neighbours for the past century? Then what are the British doing here? Have they not had an greedy eye on Spanish overseas commerce for the last 50 years? Have they not taken your colonial land 50 years ago? Do not be misled brave Spanish ! It is the British gold that has caused us to fling at each other like wild beasts ! Let us end it here and now, let us cast the greedy shopkeepers back into the sea and let us live in peace as neighbours as we have always done in the past !!!! As the unusually heavy snowstorms of late December 1811 lift, word comes from Spain's eastmost region that Napoleon Bonaparte has approved the full annexation of Catalonia into the French Empire. Its territory has been divided into four departments, and l'Empereur has declared the official language of these regions shall be Catalan - as well as French. There has been some initial support for this move within Catalonia, but only time will tell whether it has a lasting effect. New Conscripts for the Armee du Sud! A new class of French recruits has been called up, and two fresh regiments - 3eme and 23eme Regiments du Ligne - have been assigned to the Armee du Sud and their long-awaited conquest of the Spanish peninsula. As the winter snows begin to lift they arrive at Narbonne, there to await further orders from their Marshal. Local Rumours and Exploring Officers After the snows that cut off any word outside the individual regions, at long last word is starting to trickle through about possible enemy locations - and what he may have there. Whether borne on the wings of rumour or more deliberate means, at last the Generals can start to get a picture of what their foes are up to... __________________ Here's forty shillings on the drum... The time has come for the great crusade against the vile French invader! The French were once our allies; how things have changed. Pretending like cowards to be a column of wounded, French soldiers played upon our kindness and seized Barcelona; they captured our capital, forced our rightful king to abdicate, and stole the throne! When you protested against this usurper in Madrid, hundreds were massacred there and all across Spain. Since that day we have all been waging a war against these dogs. They occupy our villages, our towns, our cities. They take our property, our daughters, our wives. They behave as if all Spain is theirs to do with as they please! But you have fought them bravely. You have fought them in the hills, in the fields, and in the mountain passes. You have not submitted to the demands of the insolent usurper or his lap-dog generals! They hold no sway over you now, nor will they ever! Spain will be ruled by Spaniards again! It is time my brave countrymen! Arise! Arise! They will fall before your mighty resolve! Viva Fernando VII! Viva Espana! Captain-General Joaquin Blake y Joyes Commander-in-Chief Ejercito de Espana __________________ Here's forty shillings on the drum... We do not come to you as enemies, but as allies seeking to come to terms with the Spanish people against our common foe: the British. It is no quarrel that we have with you, therefore there is no need to keep your army behind your walls. The keeping of an armed force worrries the French government and prohibits us to operate against the British who are *invading* your lands. Yes, INVADING ! For when we are jousted out of your country do you not believe that your so-called *allies* will present you the bill? Is that the price of liberty? No, if you are sons of liberty, like us Frenchmen, liberty is offered, not paid for. We offer the people of Spain a cooperation with the French in order to ensure Peace and Liberty. Now you have the option in your hands: open the city to us and lay down your weapons that are aimed at our backs! Look around you: how many people do not want peace after four years of bitter struggle? Are we not all exhausted? We are raising a junta of Catalonia to cooperate with us up north * a Spanish government with French support. In order to show that we commit ourselves to what we preach, we are rebuilding various buildings in Zaragoza out of French finances. Is this not the proof of our real intentions? We sincerely hope that Valencia will follow the peaceful example of their countrymen up north ! We sincerely hope that a decision can be reached with our delegation within 48 hours* Commander of the IIIrd Army Group L*Armee du Sud Marechal Suchet __________________ Here's forty shillings on the drum... Some miles north of the river crossing they spotted an approaching dust cloud... and after some judicious scouting discovered some 8 000 men marching down the road toward them. Apparently some of the reports had been a little off. As ordered, they fell back before superior numbers - attempting to screen their retreat and slow the French advance. But not far north of the river crossing they had made the day before the French finally caught up with them and a small engagement became the obvious result. Who would win the Battle of Almana? Would the French drive on to the town, or would the Spanish turn them back? ----------------------------- For this battle, Sneaky Git du Sud should PM me 2eme Div / Armee II's deployment within 2 km of where the road meets the top of the map. Legatus Augusti - the owner of the Ejercito de Valencia - should deploy the Lt Bde and the 2 Cav Bde within 1 km of the orange flag in the centre of the map as his forces are 'now' falling back toward the bridge. __________________ Here's forty shillings on the drum... Probing cautiously northwards, the Spanish army approached from the south of the town on a broad front, wary of a trap. Marshal Suchet was known to be a canny foe, and for all that he had not been seen in the town he was reputed to be in the general region. However no trap was immediately visible - just the sight of a French army deploying itself in battle array, ready to greet them. Perhaps this would be a straightforward fight after all? ------------------------------------ For this battle, Sneaky Git du Sud should PM me 2eme Div / Armee III's deployment within 2 km of the town of Castellon. Blake - commander of the Ejercito de Valencia - should deploy his brigades within 1 km of the bottom edge of the map. His cautious approach means he isn't limited to the road in this case. __________________ Here's forty shillings on the drum... The French appeared to have formed a large skirmish-line, anchored on each side by their own cavalry and backed up by two batteries of artillery. And another five battalions of infantry of course. All in all a fairly convincing display of force - although one that the Spanish theoretically ought to be able to distance as they came down out of the hills. But sooner or later they would have to stop running. Would it be here, with their backs to the river? ---------------------------- Extremely quick turn-around there gentlemen, great work! Now what have you each in mind for your first phase? Git du Sud already sent me some preliminary thoughts - if you want to stick with those feel free, but if there are any changes now you can see your foe better feel free! __________________ Here's forty shillings on the drum...
