[346]Smart Home The Best Plug-In Smart Outlet Updated April 19, 2018: * We've added several models that we're currently testing to the [347]What to look forward to section. Your guide * Rachel Cericola Rachel Cericola After spending over 22 hours plugging in and unplugging lights and other small appliances and turning them on and off using various apps (and by barking orders at Siri and Alexa when we could), we found that the [348]Belkin Wemo Mini is the best smart-switch outlet adapter for people who want to add smart control to their existing outlets. It packs most of the same features as our previous pick, the Wemo Insight, into a smaller form factor, and it's less expensive. It also plays nicely with both iOS and Android smartphones and tablets and integrates easily with popular smart-home protocols and devices. All you need to do is plug the Belkin Wemo Mini into an existing outlet and install the app to get started with home automation. * [349]Share this review on Facebook * [350]Share this review on Twitter * [351]Save this review on Pocket * [352]Share this review on Pinterest * [353]Share this review with E-mail Our pick Belkin Wemo Mini [354]Belkin Wemo Mini [355]The best smart switch The Wemo Mini is a strong performer that's easy to use. More compact than its predecessor, it works with both Android and iOS devices, and supports Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit (via Bridge), Google Home, and IFTTT. [356]$35 from Walmart [357]$30 from Amazon [358]$60 from Amazon [359]Buy from Amazon [360]Buy from Amazon All of the smart plug-in switches we tested performed well, turning anything that's plugged into them on or off remotely via smartphone or tablet. However, the [361]Belkin Wemo Mini's compact design, price, and set of smart-home features set it apart from the competition. The Wemo Mini supports[362] IFTTT ("if this then that"), so you can create home-automation "recipes" to use it along with other smart devices in your home. The switch even works with Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit (via the [363]Wemo Bridge), and Google Home, allowing you to turn on a lamp, fan, or other electronic device with the sound of your voice. Advertisement Runner-up iHome iSP8 [364]iHome iSP8 [365]A smart switch for smart-home enthusiasts The iSP8 adds energy monitoring and extra smart-home integration, including support for Apple HomeKit, SmartThings, Wink, and more. [366]$50 from Amazon [367]$55 from Amazon [368]Buy from Amazon If our main pick is unavailable, the [369]iHome iSP8 is a solid choice. It's just as compact as our top pick and offers support for Alexa, Google, and HomeKit, as well as SmartThings and Wink smart-home systems. It also includes energy-monitoring features and comes with a stand-alone remote for control without a smartphone. As an editor for Electronic House and Big Picture Big Sound I've written buyer's guides for all kinds of consumer electronics. I've also done tech-related work for Wired, Woman's Day, GeekMom, Men's Health, USA Today, and others. Who should get this (BUTTON) Smartphones and tablets can put access to a slew of functions into your pockets these days. You already use that phone or tablet to answer email, watch TV, and even check in on your old high school friends, why not use it to make sure the lights and other appliances at home are on or off? If you're the type of person who is constantly paranoid about whether you left the iron on, smart plugs can ease your anxiety. Pull Quote A smart switch is a perfect starter device for someone interested in smart-home technology. You don't need fancy hubs, programming skills, or an installer on speed dial to use them. These are small devices that plug into any outlet and allow you to control the connected appliance wirelessly via an app. Some (like our picks) communicate via Wi-Fi, others use Bluetooth. A smart switch is a perfect starter device for someone interested in smart-home technology. You don't need fancy hubs, programming skills, or an installer on speed dial to use them, and they give you real functionality with very little fuss. If you've got a smartphone and an empty outlet in your house, you can automate something easily. Putting even just one smart switch into your home can ensure that you'll never enter a dark house; add a few and you can control items such as household fans, speakers, slow cookers, air conditioners, and more. The smart switches we picked were designed for beginners or anyone looking to squeeze a little extra automation into a specific spot of their home. These units will work in homes, apartments, dorm rooms, offices, or anywhere else with a free outlet and, in most cases, a Wi-Fi connection. We focused on the models that could easily work alone, though you can integrate some of them with other smart devices. How we picked (BUTTON) We started compiling a list of smart switches by doing a Google search mainly looking for reviews and roundups. We found lists of likely devices on sites such as CNET, Pocket-lint, and MakeUseOf. Once we had a list, we went through Amazon and Google to see what kind of feedback was available and found a few additional selections in the process. The list of available switches is a pretty lengthy one. However, we were able to immediately cut it in half because several of the plugs we found required the use of smart-home hubs, other control devices, or full-control systems. The thing about smart switches is they're supposed to be easy to use. You should be able to plug in one, plug something into it, download the related app to the device of your choice, and have immediate access to controlling whatever you plugged into the switch. You shouldn't need a separate box (a hub) if you're only looking to turn a light on and off. At bare minimum, you should be able to turn the outlet on and off from your smartphone or tablet. Of course, having a hub or system means that you can integrate your plugs into a larger setup with lighting, sensors, cameras, and more. Some plugs also offer remote control from outside of the home without requiring a hub, as well as options to dim lights, set schedules and timers, and even work with IFTTT so you can create your own home-automation recipes. For instance, if your wireless security camera senses motion, the plug can turn on a light. Similarly, many of the switches we looked at are part of a family of smart devices, such as wall switches, motion sensors, or smart bulbs, which all use the same app and may be designed to work together in differing capacities. smart switch group Smart switches are an easy way to add remote control to any electronic device. Photo: Rachel Cericola Our list was still slightly too lengthy, so we eliminated other switches for lack of features, bad Amazon reviews, and high prices. The average price for a smart switch is in the $40 range--and you really shouldn't pay more than that. However, we opted to throw one pricier model into the test mix, the ConnectSense Smart Outlet. This switch offers two remote-controllable outlets, so you'd actually get twice the control for the extra money you'd spend. How we tested (BUTTON) First and foremost, a smart switch should be easy to operate. That's really what it's all about. It should take minutes, if not seconds, for you to attach it to an outlet, plug an appliance or other item into it, download the switch's app, and start controlling whatever you plugged in. The switch also needs to perform reliably. The switch's app should be compatible with your smartphone or tablet of choice and include the ability to turn the switch's power on and off. The app should also provide extras such as scheduling and the option to group multiple smart switches. For our testing, features beyond basic on-off or dimming were considered bonuses, especially if they proved useful. A lot of the smart-switch models we tested let you track energy usage and include some type of smart-home integration. That means once you get addicted to controlling a lamp remotely, you may be able to integrate it with other smart-home devices, such as security cameras, TVs, thermostats, and more. Most of the devices we tested offered these types of perks, so, again, the only reason you'd want to spend more is if you want remote control over two outlets instead of one. (The ConnectSense Smart Outlet is the only switch on the list that offers that option.) For each of our tests, I downloaded apps to an iPhone 5, an iPad, and a Samsung Galaxy S6. Most of the switches connected to Wi-Fi easily and were simple to operate. I kept all of the plugs confined to the lower level of my house, but operated controls from across the house, out in the driveway, and across the street (up to 150 feet away). For smart switches that offered extended remote control, I played around with settings while at the grocery store (2 miles away), gym (10 miles away), and other houses (up to 50 miles away). To keep things interesting, I plugged a variety of items into our test switches, including a table lamp, a fan, a white-noise machine, TVs, and even a flat iron. Our pick: Belkin Wemo Mini (BUTTON) three prong cord plugged into Wemo Mini switch plugged into wall outlet Belkin's Wemo Mini Switch turns any outlet into a smart outlet you can control with your iOS or Android device. Our pick Belkin Wemo Mini [383]Belkin Wemo Mini [384]The best smart switch The Wemo Mini is a strong performer that's easy to use. More compact than its predecessor, it works with both Android and iOS devices, and supports Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit (via Bridge), Google Home, and IFTTT. [385]$35 from Walmart [386]$30 from Amazon [387]$60 from Amazon [388]Buy from Amazon [389]Buy from Amazon Belkin recently slimmed down its smart plug offering, with the [390]Wemo Mini. The company's newest smart plug is just as reliable as our previous top pick, the Wemo Insight, but is more compact and $15 cheaper. It connects to the same Wemo app, which can control several devices remotely, includes options for scheduling and rules, connects with both iOS and Android apps, and can be integrated with other smart-home devices. This is the third Wemo smart plug, so it shouldn't be a surprise that it's a charm. small square Belkin plug next to skinny rectangular Wemo plug Belkin shrank its WeMo switch into a smaller, more convenient package than its last model. The Wemo Mini is compact, delivering smart features to one socket in a duplex outlet without blocking the second one, and its shape allows you to place it in the top or bottom socket of an outlet, which can be a problem with larger competitors. The switch easily connects to your Wi-Fi without needing a hub. It performed as advertised throughout our testing period, providing on-off control from inside and outside of the house whenever called upon. I even created reliable schedules and rules so that lamps and fans would turn on and off at set times of the day. Once again, Belkin has improved on the appearance of its smart plug lineup with the Wemo Mini. Measuring 3.8 by 1.4 by 2.4 inches, it's a bit longer than the last model but also slimmer. It's also cheaper, coming in at $15 less than the Insight and $5 less than the original Wemo Switch. It also ditches the bright power button of the Insight, so you can sleep, watch movies, or sit in a completely dark room without being distracted. controls on screen of smartphone app for the Wemo The Wemo app allows basic on-off control, plus rules and schedules. The Wemo Android and iOS apps are almost identical, offering on-off controls, rules, timers, and energy-usage information (the Insight Switch is currently the only Wemo device that monitors energy usage). The one difference between the two apps is that the iOS version offers additional controls at the bottom of the screen; the Android version stuffs the same menu into a pull-down at the top of the screen. Both versions can combine all Wemo devices on one screen, and each app is laid out very well, making everything easy to find and use. The apps even include photos of each Wemo device (though you can also use your own photos of your lamp, fan, pet, etc., if you prefer). Like its predecessor, the Wemo Mini also stands out because of its compatibility. It works with iOS and Android portables and also with a wealth of other smart-home devices. In addition to integrating with Wemo devices, such as the Wemo Insight, the Wemo Motion Kit, and Wemo LED Lighting, the switch also works with the Amazon Echo, Apple HomeKit (via the [391]Wemo Bridge), Google Home, and IFTTT. Ry Crist at CNET praises the updated model, saying "it's a smart, simple way to get started with home automation, and the new, less obtrusive design is leaps and bounds better than before." Flaws but not dealbreakers (BUTTON) The Wemo Mini may be the cheapest Belkin smart plug currently out there, but that savings will cost you in features. Unlike the Wemo Insight, the Mini does not offer energy monitoring or the customizable alerts that we loved so much last time around. The latter allows you to receive notices on your smartphone or tablet every time the switch goes on or off. Belkin added HomeKit support to its Wemo lineup in January 2018, via the Wemo Bridge. This add-on dongle connects to your router and provides HomeKit support over all current Wemo devices. It works well, but adds to the cost of the setup. Also know that you will need an Apple TV or iPad at home if you want to access the [392]Wemo Bridge outside of the house. Runner-up: iHome iSP8 (BUTTON) cord plugged into iHome port plugged into wall outlet Photo: Rachel Cericola Runner-up iHome iSP8 [393]iHome iSP8 [394]A smart switch for smart-home enthusiasts The iSP8 adds energy monitoring and extra smart-home integration, including support for Apple HomeKit, SmartThings, Wink, and more. [395]$50 from Amazon [396]$55 from Amazon [397]Buy from Amazon The[398] iHome iSP8 is a solid runner-up. It performs all of the standard smart-switch features very well, but adds additional smart-home integration and energy monitoring so you can see how much energy your lava lamp is wasting. It also comes with a separate remote control for controlling it without a smartphone (from up to 35 feet away). The drawback of these extra features is that they cost more than our top pick. If you don't need it to work with a smart-home hub, you don't need to spend the extra money. The latest smart switch from iHome looks a lot like the model we tested last time around, the iSP5. However, this one comes with a lot of improvements. The most obvious is that it includes energy monitoring, which can be tracked in the companion app for iOS and Android devices. It also performed a lot better than its predecessor, without any of the connectivity problems we experienced the last time around. Also worth noting is that this model has a few additional smart-home perks over our main pick. Besides Alexa, HomeKit, Google and Nest integration, the iSP8 offers support for SmartThings and Wink smart-home systems, so you can connect it to a hub and make it a part of a larger, whole-house smart-home system (including devices not made by iHome). This model also packs a separate remote control, which comes in handy if you don't have your smartphone nearby. The remote is extremely basic, offering just on and off features for the one plug, up to 35 feet away from the device. However, it does not need line-of-sight, which is very much appreciated. The app is easy to use, offering options for zones, rooms, scenes, schedules, and triggers. Available for iOS and Android devices, it does have a few graphical elements under the Scenes section. It would be nice if iHome could extend some of those aesthetics to the rest of the app, but it's extremely easy to use. Our one gripe about the iSP8 is the price. Coming in about $15 more than our main pick, outfitting an entire house with these things would be hard. It would be nice if iHome could bring down the cost to the level of the iSP6, which has an MSRP of $39.99. However, that model is still more expensive than our main pick and doesn't include the energy-monitoring perks. Care and maintenance (BUTTON) Though smart switches may be the easiest thing to connect in the smart home, they do have the occasional issue or two. If you're having problems connecting your switch to your network, the first thing you should do is reboot the router. That fixes most problems. Power cycling can also solve an issue. And finally, make sure your switch is turned on. (Typically, when you plug in a switch it's in off mode.) The competition (BUTTON) [399]Geeni Energi Our previous budget pick, the Geeni Energi, is now discontinued. But it was a reliable performer, as well as the least expensive Wi-Fi smart plug we tested, with an easy-to-use app that came with all the standard smart-switch features and Alexa and Google compatibility. Our biggest complaint was that it was slightly bulkier than our other picks. [400]Belkin Wemo Insight Switch Our previous top pick is still a solid smart plug. It's very user-friendly and has a lot of smart-home perks, including support for Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit (via the [401]Wemo Bridge), Google Home, Nest, and IFTTT. The Insight is not as compact as the Wemo Mini, but it does pack all of that integration, remote control, customizable alerts, and energy monitoring into a unit that still fits nicely over one receptacle. We've used the Insight regularly for months after our initial review, and it's still going strong. It's as easy and reliable to use today as it was on day one. [402]iDevices Switch Last time around, we picked the Switch as our runner-up, and it's still an aesthetic standout. It's currently the only model to make its physical presence useful via a customizable LED night-light that can be turned on-off or tweaked to match your room's color scheme. It's also the only model to feature a side outlet versus having the receptacle on the front. After months of use, it still performs very well, and includes energy monitoring and support for Alexa and Apple HomeKit. [403]TP-Link Smart Wi-Fi Plug TP-Link now has two smart plugs, the [404]HS105 and the [405]HS110. Both are about the same price, but distinguish themselves with a single feature. The HS105 is a standout because of its size. Also known as the Mini, this was the smallest model we tested, measuring 2.61 by 1.49 by 1.57 inches. (The Belkin Mini was a close second, at 3.8 by 1.4 by 2.4 inches.) The HS110 was the bulkiest single-outlet model we tested, but it adds in energy-monitoring features. Both also work with Amazon Alexa and allow for schedules, timers, scenes, and even an Away mode. [406]ConnectSense Smart Outlet The ConnectSense Smart Outlet is the largest smart switch that we tested. However, it's also the only one we tested that has two Wi-Fi-enabled electrical outlets that you can control and monitor individually. It even throws in a 2.4-amp USB charging port (you can't monitor it). The ConnectSense app is iOS only, but it does offer Apple HomeKit support. The app is basic and doesn't offer any sort of energy-usage monitoring or other noteworthy features. [407]iHome iSP5 This older iHome model offered a decent selection of extras, most notably Works With Nest abilities and integration with HomeKit, Wink, and Amazon Alexa. It also works with iOS and Android devices. However, the Android version doesn't have the ability to create scenes (e.g., good night, away) and neither app can track energy usage. Also, we regularly had problems with the iSP5 finding some of the HomeKit devices on our network. [408]D-Link DSP-W215 The DSP-W215 is compact but larger than some of the other switches on our list. When plugging it in, make sure to stick it in the top outlet in order to keep the bottom one free. It was easy to set up but requires jumping through a few additional hoops if you need to set it up manually (e.g., if your router doesn't have a WPS button). That said, we do love that it works with other D-Link devices, IFTTT, Amazon Echo, and Apple TV (but not HomeKit). It also has identical iOS and Android apps with options to control power remotely and create schedules, group devices, and track energy usage. [409]GE Bluetooth Plug-In Smart Switch This is a great little option if you're specifically looking to control devices from within your house. It's a Bluetooth switch, which means it won't work from the office, the beach, or any other remote location. It uses the Avi-on app, which performed fine on both iOS and Android devices. Both apps do have options for timers and scheduling, as well as energy-usage monitoring. But be aware that this switch works only with other devices within the GE/Jasco family. Overall, it would be a better option if it cost less than switches that offer remote control from outside of the house. [410]Elgato Eve Energy Like the GE Smart Switch, this option relies on Bluetooth, which means you can control it only from inside the house, unless you have an Apple TV in your system. It also supports only iOS, with the latest version of the app available only for those with iOS 10.0 or later. It has options for timers, scheduling, energy monitoring, and integration. It also has Apple HomeKit support and a better-looking app than our other Bluetooth model. However, those features aren't worth the extra cost, especially when it can't be controlled remotely. [411]Edimax SP-2101W The SP-2101W is a sturdy little device but also very bulky. If you plug it into the top outlet, it will cover the entire receptacle. Even when I moved it to the bottom outlet it hogged too much of the top outlet for me to plug anything into it. The switch does have some good features, but its Android and iOS apps' interfaces are a little confusing. We knocked the SP-2101W down to the bottom of our list because it was the only switch we tested that doesn't currently offer any sort of smart-home integration. What to look forward to (BUTTON) After we published our original guide, we started seeing smart plugs come down in price a lot. This is a trend we'd like to see continue, because a smart plug is a simple device and a great way to dabble in smart-home technology. We are currently testing some of these cheaper smart plugs, including the [412]Cnct IntelliPlug and the [413]Etekcity Voltson, which are sold in single- and multi-outlet packs. The [414]Monoprice 27937 is another affordable, stand-alone product we'll testing. It offers remote control, energy monitoring, and integration with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. We also found out that the [415]Geeni Spot replaced our previous budget pick, the [416]Geeni Energi. We are testing the Spot, as well as the [417]Geeni Switch+Charge, a Wi-Fi smart plug with two USB ports; the [418]PureGear PureSwitch, which has a single USB port and HomeKit support; and the [419]Koogeek Smart Plug, which combines remote control with energy monitoring, as well as support for Alexa, Google Home, and HomeKit. Our next update will also include testing notes on two Leviton Decora Smart plugs. The [420]DW3HL-1BW is specifically designed for use with lights and features dimming functions, while you can pair the [421]DW15A-1BW with lights and everything else electronic. Both include support for Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, and Nest devices. We're also seeing more smart plugs designed for outdoor use. We're currently looking at the [422]iHome iSP100 Outdoor Smart Plug, the [423]iClever Outdoor Wi-Fi Outlet, and the [424]Geeni Outdoor Smart Plug. Sources (BUTTON) 1.
