Art goes on! Steve Larson, "Snowy Grain," is part of a two-person exhibition tonight at OneVillage a Community Church, hosting its Final Friday Evening of Art and Music for a Cause in Roeland Park, Kansas, from 6 to 10 p.m. January 29. The other featured artist is Tommy Creach. The other featured artist is Tommy Creach. Image: courtesy of the artist and gallery January's end brings a host of exhibitions in snowy Wichita, Kansas, tonight - which are being cancelled left and right. The Steckline Gallery has confirmed they are open (early, as of 4:30 p.m.) and we're listing what we know as we hear word; calling any gallery in Wichita you are considering visiting in the snowfall is a good idea. Starting Friday, this weekend shows work in the local Kansas City area (including film festival in KCK on Saturday!), including Lawrence. Sunday is the Fresh and Local art auction by Guerilla Curating at Room 39. We recommend you check that out and help some great causes, including the ArtsKC Fund, which kicks off its annual workplace giving campaign on Monday. Review is one of their many beneficiaries, and we encourage you to consider hosting a campaign where you work or just making a donation. Finally, if you happen to be out in sunny Oakland, California, drop in at the Swarm Gallery where Review Studios Artist and UMKC instructor Barry Anderson is showing Ectoplasmic Response, a video installation originally created for the Intermissions project at Light Work in Syracuse, New York for this 25-channel, 55-speaker HD video projection with surrounding sound. There is an opening reception Saturday, January 30, from 6 to 8 p.m., and the exhibition, which includes Dis/Integrations by Sonya Blesofsky and Stock Up On Heal and Mana Potions by Casey Jex Smith, is up through March 14. [IMG] Barry Anderson, installation view at Light Work Gallery in Syracuse, New York, September 2009. "Ectoplasmic Response" references and appropriates global pop culture images and sounds, as well as elements representing personal mythologies; the piece is a direct homage to early 20th century spiritualists and 'spirit photography.'" Anderson is based in Kansas City, Missouri, and has shown recently at Everson Museum of Art in Syracuse, New York, and the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art in Overland Park, Kansas. This public lecture series is part of a course at KCAI (in which each student will design, plan, and teach a short workshop at the Southeast Community Center in Swope Park, Kansas City, Missouri). The overall goal is to teach artists how to be excellent teachers in a community setting, though some lectures will focus on more general classroom basics). These Thursday sessions are open to the public, so all artists are encouraged to learn about sharing their talents with the community at large. More information about the course's instructors is posted the week of their lectures here on the KCAI site. All lectures are free and take place on Thursdays at 11:30 a.m. in the Epperson Auditorium of Vanderslice Hall on the KCAI campus (except for February 11th's lecture, which will be at the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art). Funded by a KCAI Outstanding Project Award and an ArtsKC Fund Inspiration Grant. This week's topic: Diverse communities and how difference influences classroom motivation.
